Project Space: Josh Daniel - Remnants of an Archive of Lost Places

Remnants of an Archive of Lost Places
Daniel’s exhibition for Seventh features the documentation of the San Lorenzo Archive of Lost Places made in 1983 by anthropologist Felix Hoenikker. An ambitious but little known research collection founded by the late president of San Lorenzo, Hoenikker stumbled across it while completing a research paper on sites of natural or cultural import that had been destroyed during military conflicts and human caused disasters. The Archives themselves did not have such a specific focus in its collection policies, and held documents representative of a wide variety of places that were, for whatever reason, now unobtainable or ‘lost’. Ironically Hoenikker’s amateur photographs and slides of parts of the collection that he considered appealing or relevant to his research are now the only remaining parts of the collection extant, due to a cataclysmic cyclone that laid waste to much of San Lorenzo in the summer of 1984. Hoenikker’s collection came into the possession of the artist at a garage sale in Vermont following the former’s passing and the dissolution of his estate by relatives. Daniel has subsequently been researching Hoenikker’s academic writings and personal papers held in the Library of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.
Daniel graduated from Fine Art at RMIT in 2003 and did Honours at Monash University in 2004. Originally trained in printmaking, his work has evolved into site specific installation with a contextual research focus. Daniel has exhibited and participated in projects for, amongst others, Next Wave, Spacement, Clubs, the ICA London and most recently, Gallery Sogool, Seoul. In 2011 he is beginning an MFA at Monash.

Seventh Gallery is very VERY excited about a visit from

TAKURO KOTAKA
International Artist in Residence 2010/11
28 December 2010 – 10 January 2011

Based in Tokyo, Japan, Kotaka is a cross-disciplinary artist concerned with the everyday experiences of people he encounters on his travels. Working with performance, installation and video Kotaka addresses questions of cultural communication, otherness, history and narrative.

In 2010, after hearing a rumour that ‘there are no potatoes in Egypt’ Kotaka bought a potato in South Africa and traveled across the African continent for seven months to Egypt, visiting 14 countries along the way. The resultant work Traveling Africa with a Potato takes the form of documentation and a video installation and records Kotaka’s encounters with the people he met on the journey.

For his Melbourne residency Kotaka will continue his exploration of community and shared experience. He will seek to create a utopian New Years Eve celebration with locals;
I heard that people in Melbourne watch big fireworks to celebrate a New Year. When I heard the story, I imagined that it would be great if I could watch the New Year’s fireworks with 1000 people on the top of a small hill, and drinking beer. I then become interested in actually searching for such an ideal place to participate the special event that I imagined.
As with his previous works, it is that search that will drive Kotaka’s project and create unexpected encounters and outcomes.

At the end of Kotaka’s residency the project will be exhibited on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th January, 12-6pm, with a closing event on Friday 7th January, 6 – 8pm.

Takuro Kotaka has exhibited in Japan and internationally since 2004. Recent exhibitions include Future Vision - The APT Global Art Collection, Li-Space, Beijing, 2010; 56th International movie festival Oberhauzen, Oberhauzen, Germany, 2010; /+\=X serialworks, Cape town, South Africa, 2010; Jakarta biennale 2009, Indonesian National Gallery, Jakarta, 2009; Istanbul international film festival, Istanbul, 2007; Artist as Activist, Plan B, Tokyo, Japan, 2007;SF TOKYO @ 667Shotwell at Tokyo-San Francisco Art Festival, San Francisco, 2006.

From the utopian ambitions of the modernist movement through pop culture piss-take and the confusion of life in the 21st century, each artist in ‘Three Moves’ engages with a dizzying spectrum of forms and ideas. Works by Arlo Mountford, Gemma Smith, and Francis Alÿs all muck around with Marcel Duchamp’s famous maxim that ‘art is a game’,variously poking fun at, reconfiguring, or playing with a vast array of visual referents, from the familiar to the foreign. Rather than breaking free from the past, each artist meets it head on, mining the annals of art history in order to make it new - to ham it up, break it open, and take it out to the streets. Three artists, three moves: It’s a nonsensical game between irony and intellect where art wins handsdown.

Melbourne-based artist Arlo Mountford employs a witty and often sardonic approach to explore the contextual relationship between contemporary art practice and its perceived past, working primarily with interactive installation paired with sound, video and animation.Mountford has exhibited regularly since 2002, and his work been shownin a number of significant group exhibitions including: ‘NEW010’,Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2010);‘Contemporary Australia: Optimism’, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane(2008); and ‘21st Century Modern: Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art’, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide (2006). Mountford’s most recent solo exhibitions have been at Centre of ContemporaryPhotography, Melbourne (2009); Grantpirrie, Sydney (2010); The Art Centre Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, (2009); Conical, Melbourne(2008) and Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne (2007).

Gemma Smith is well known for exuberantly coloured sculptures and paintings that play with pictorial depth and geometric abstraction. Smith's work has been shown extensively throughout Australia, featuring in major group exhibitions including: 'Cubism & Australian Art', Heide Museum of Modern Art (2010); 'Temperature 2', Museum of Brisbane, Brisbane (2009); 'Contemporary Australia: Optimism', Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2008); 'Primavera', Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2008). Smith has recently held solo shows at Sarah Cottier, Sydney (2008,2010), Milani Gallery, Brisbane (2008,2010) and Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne (2009).

Born in Belgium and now based in Mexico City, Francis Alÿs has produced a complex body of work that uses allegorical and poeticmethods to address social and political realities. A simple action isoften the starting point for his practice, either by the artist orothers, which is then documented in a range of media spanning video,painting, performance and drawing. Alys’s has been the subject ofseveral major solo exhibitions at the WIELS Centre d'art contempora in,Belgium (2010), UCLA Hammer, Los Angeles (2007), Tate Modern, London,(2010); Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg (2004); and Museum of ModernArt, New York (2002). Alÿs has also been included in major biennales including São Paulo (1998, 2005), Istanbul (1999, 2001) and Venice(1999, 2001, 2007); as well as numerous international group exhibitions.

THESE ARE YOUR INSTRUCTIONS!

Loosely based on the work of conceptual artist Sol leWitt, five artists were invited to present instructions detailing the creation/completion/extension of artworks to a participatory audience. Gallery visitors were invited to take an active part in the exhibitions development by constructing, developing or performing the works according to their own interpretation over the course of the exhibition.

Part happening, part conceptual, part minimal, part chaos the outcomes from THESE ARE YOUR INSTRUCTIONS were unpredictable and uncertain.

The opening night was almost riotous!

Opening February 3rd, 2010 - Ross Coulter, Kent Wilson & Joanna Anderson

This is our first Calendar show for 2010, and what a great start. In Gallery One, for his installation titled Prelude, Ross Coulter has created an airy installation using paper planes - the room at first appears to be filled with IKEA pendant lamps, but upon closer inspection, these clusters of angular paper reveal themselves to be dozens of paper planes all taking siultaneous nose-dives.

The centrepiece of this work is a large concrete plinth, reminiscent of Rachel Whiteread or Bruce Nauman's 'A Cast of the Space Under My Chair', but here the conflict of flight and heaviness is literally compounded, as paper planes collide and embed themselves within this weighty - both metaphorically and literally - object.

In gallery Two, Kent Wilson's Plane of Composition, although not related to paper planes per se, still resonates with Ross' almost entirely white room: Kent's sculpture is also almost entirely white, apart from several objects carefully placed upon it.

A pyramid of speakers project a little water spout which sends a trickle of water down a perfect semi-circular groove to two pools, one containing a bonsai and the other a webcam. From the speakers emanates the weird cracking noise of the artist breaking twigs from two significant trees in melbourne, one related to indigenous Australians and the other to European settlers. Here, this self conscious gesture is slowed down and made aesthetic.

In the Project Space, Joanna Anderson has created an intimate drawing/sculpture titled CARE FACTOR, that encapsulates a kind of 'teenage girl's bedroom' aesthetic - a string of fairy lights that dangle around portraits of friends, family and other people we assume the artist admires...or perhaps not? The deflated balloons suspended in the centre of the arrangement lend a kind of fragile emotionality to the work, while the double-mantra 'Don't be Scared, don't be Scared' makes you wonder whether or not there is reason to be frightened here...

We Don't Need Another Hero

For the apptly titled group show, We Don't Need Another Hero, curator by Amy-Jo Jory invited artists, writers and friends to create an artwork in response - negative, positive or indifferent - to their hero. The list of accompanying idols was impressive, and hilarious, ranging from Steven Hawking and 'Bruce' [Willis...I think?] to Anais Nin and Helen Clark. There were even some artists referred to!

Those involved chose to express their love, hatred and/or mistrust of famous folks in all manner of ways, making for a thoroughly entertaining and often hilarious exhibition. There were, for the more serious amongst us, plenty of works which engaged with art history and theory as well.

The opening event showcased several performances, including a song by Rory from Gaslight Radio, about Robin Adamson - a taxidermy enthusiast who was jailed for stealing stuffed birds from Sydney Museum.

Another excellent show at Seventh, and a really fun opening.

Congratulations everyone on your great work!

CHRIS LAWRENCE from PHILLY [That's, like, in the U.S.A., Right?!]*

Over the December break, we decided it would be a shame to let Seventh wallow in the heat and overbearing absence of art that an empty gallery so easily suffers from...So we invited an artist from Philadelphia, Chris Lawrence - a soon to be MFA Graduate from the University of Pennsylvania - to come and have a month or so long resdiency in the space, in which he could construct an installation throughout the entire gallery.

Chris rose eagerly to the challenge, and created an immersive and engaging installation, utilising a combination of found objects and

sleek materials. Channeling Jessica Stockholder and Ingvar Kamprad, among others, Chris' main construction appeared as a kind of elaborately broken machine, combining hi-tech electronics and brutally smashed lenghts of timber.

At the closing event, once the work was complete, Melbourne's own My Disco generously performed to the crowd. The event was literally earth shaking. Those guys rock out very loud and hard. Their minimal art-rock instumental jams complemented Chris' work beautifully.

On the whole, a really exciting show. Thanks heaps Chris for making the voyage to Oz and creating such a beautiful show for everyone! And thanks to My Disco for shaking up the foundations a bit...

Seventh Super $ell-Out Sale 2009

Whew.

Thank God [He/She's partly to blame] that the festive season is drawing to a close.

A lot has been happening here at Seventh: December saw our annual fundraiser, the Super $ell-Out Sale bring in flocks of art-lovers, collectors and general philanthropic beer-swillers to peruse the goods - and for some - make a lifetime investment in a work of art. The event was a great success, with a 'significant sum' raised for our 2010 program.

Thanks again to all who came and supported us and our artists! The community spirit was flowing freely. And an even bigger, special thanks to all our artist from 2009, and to those from our 2010 calendar who donated work to the sale. You guys are why we're still here.

Opening November 3rd: Wanda Gillespie, Antuong Nguyen & Ross Taylor

In Gallery one was Wanda Gillespie's Swi Gunting, a menagerie of beautifully hand-crafted trolley-like machines commissioned by Wanda from a group of Indonesian craftsmen.

Gallery Two and the Project Space contained :), a collection of digital works by Antuong Nguyen, photographic and video-based, respectively. Images and footage sourced from the web provide the base material for Nguyen's works; his video mash-up of extreme sportspeople has a measured, almost choreoghraphic quality to it, as long distance runners morph into sky-divers and then into synchronized swimmers...

On the Night Screen was Ross Taylor's I Knew She'd Be Back, in which the artist attempts to sweep back the ocean. This poetic, yet absurd gesture embodies the way in which, when it comes to lost loved ones, we may cling so desperately to an unfounded reality...

great stuff.

October 13 - 31: Michael Ciavarella, Kiera Brew Kurec, Salote Tawale & Rosa Tato

In Gallery One is Michael Ciavarella's Hard and Fast, a collection of small-scale canvases and collages accompanied by a large, concrete sculpture on the floor. The sculpture looks like a plinth that's been dug out from the earth or retreived from the bottom of the sea. It's weightiness seems an apt contrast to the airy, sparse and [occasionally] comical wall based works.

In Gallery Two is Kiera Brew Kurec's Dead Life. This enormous festoon occupies the whole space, and emanates vaguely the sound of Easter Litanies from a Ukranian Orthodox church. The pungent odour of plant matter fills your nostrils when you eneter this darkened room, and the sensation of an organic living [or dying] presence is overwhelming.

Salote Tawale's I love you, I REALLY DO, is in the project space. This work contains two parts, a large photocopy blown up to a huge scale of a hand giving the single-finger salute. Simultaneously confronting and hilarious. On the floor next to it is a video of a woman [the artist] doing a really great dance that just makes you smile.

And finally, on the Night Screen we have Rosa Tato's Made in China. This video, comprised of photgraphic stills taken by Rosa during a visit to china, explores the comparisons and contrasts of traditional Chinese garments and the industry that surrounds them.

September 22 - October 10: FELT up, Kate Hodgetts & Sharna Osborne

In gallery one and the project space we have FELT up, the ARI swap [see below] with FELT space from Adelaide. These guys risked life and limb to cart their art over to Melbourne - and what a fantastic show. Very sculpturally orientated, with painting and video as well [even Monte's video works were presented in a spatial manner]. These artists include: Annika Evans, James Marshall, Matt Huppatz, Brigid Noone, Logan MacDonald and Monte Masi.

In Gallery Two is Kate Hodgetts' work Portable, a frenetic video in which a camera scurries through the undergrowth of a typically Aussie forest, accompanied by feedback driven electric guitar. An intense experience indeed.

The large cardboard sculpture is a part of Circuit, a multi-faceted installation by Matthew Gingold. During the Fringe Festival, this modular sculpture was installed in ARIs all around Victoria, and allowed visitors to view - via a webcam and built in modem - gallery visitors in the other venues.

On The Night Screen was Sharna Osborne's The Flummox of Equilibria 7 : Family Tree, in which the artist and several actors played out a kind of ritualistic depiction of family stereotypes, here transformed into absurd characters.

SEVENTH-Up @ FELTspace, Adelaide

So last month we folks here at Seventh packed a bunch of artworks into a tarago and cruised over to Adelaide to have a show there. After 'heading west' and finding ourselves almost at Warnambool, we realised that it was time to get a map. We promptly headed north to join the road that we should have been on the entire time, and after much sing-along singing, bottles of cider and pleasant country scenery, found ourselves in sunny Adelaide [it was night-time and raining when we got there though].

Our Exhibition was hosted by the lovely folks from FELTspace, a little ARI in downtown Adelaide - conveniently located right near some of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. The premise of our show was an 'ARI swap', meaning that once we'd shown over there, the artists from FELT would come over to Melbourne and have an exhibition at Seventh gallery. This idea proved to be very successful, and as a result we now know where the good pubs in Adelaide are.

In Gallery One and on the Night Screen was Christopher Koller's photographic and video installation, A One Legged Schoolteacher, Two Anarchist Bullfighters and a Poet. Koller's work is centred around a visit to the site of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Llorca's assasination.

In Gallery Two, Chris Hartnett's Blurring Boundaries presented the viewer with two visual components, a tent with a fur rug, lit from within with a floursescent light and a video on the wall displaying footage of animals dully pacing to and fro in zoo enclosures.

And in the Project Space was Jordan Wood's Evoludicrous. This menacing installation oscillated somewhere between ancient mystical talismans and post-apocalyptic totems.

Tuesday August 11, Opening Night!

'Neo Black', in Gallery One and the Project Space, featured works from Georgina Cue, Dean Thompson and Michael Staniak.

Michael Staniak explains that "this exhibition explores three unique and contrasting methods where black has been used, not so much as a colour value but more as a concept derived from science, media and popular culture".

Georgina Cue's embroideries involve a delicate portrayal of cinema noir and mysterious street deaths and murders.

Dean Thompson's painted fibreglass canvases seem to transform from solid materials to fragile, vulnerable substances.

Michael Staniak's oil paintings and fluorescent lights eerily lit the room. He explores quantum physics and black holes and the ability for scientists to re-create this phenomenon through machines.

Submerged in Gallery Two was the work of Laureen Lansdown, 'Planktos-Made to Wander'.

Playing on the Night Screen was Georgie Roxby Smith's 'Walk 8:57am<>Run 8:59am'.

Opening Night July 21st

A delightful bunch of artists are exhibiting at Seventh this time 'round until August 8.

Gallery One contains the wonderful works of Dane Lovett (pictured below with buddy).

For one night only, Hao Guo transmitted himself into the Project Space through the wonders of technology. The crowd was able to interact one on one with Hao to ask important questions about the weather in China.

Stephen Palmer, Hao Guo and Andrew Atchison are showing their pieces in Gallery Two.

Float away with Kate Fauld's enchanting animation, 'Balloon', showing on the Night Screen from 6pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Exhibition Opening Night June 9th

'Twas a chilly Tuesday night at Seventh this week. Luckily the large crowd generated some much needed heat. Thank you to all for sharing your warmth once again.

Jody Cleaver's animation and photographs of sculptural puppets fill the Project Space and double up with another animation on the Night Screen, definitely worth a closer look. Brave that cool breeze and stand outside Seventh from 6pm to 12am otherwise take a few rides down Gertrude St on tram 86.

Some of the crowd peering into the intriguing pieces in Gallery One...so much to see!

Gallery One contains 'Host' by Charlotte Ghaie and Jacob Weiss exploring the 'Thing' that comes from the inner space, not outer space. Weiss explores where the inner ends and the outer begins. Ghaie's watercolours and crafts peer into the cultural other and 'the misappropriation of the imagery of the other'.

In Gallery One, Vanessa Van Houten explores a moment of loss with portraits and written thoughts in 'Remembering What's Lost'.

Mural #001 by Sapna Chandu comfortably fills Gallery Two. The crowd enjoyed the seating and don't you be afraid to come down, do the same and discover Chandu's installation.

The Project Space contains Sary Zananiri's 'On the Road to Jerusalem'.

Peter Thomas' 'Nine Day Wonder' splashes colour onto the Night Screen from 6pm to 12am Tuesday to Saturday.

Gallery one is taken over with Alisdair McLuckie's continuous apocalyptic landscape, "The Highest Mountain Peaks, Right Before Dawn"

and in Gallery Two is Kate Moss & John Burgess' "Antipodal Sorcery", an atmospheric starscape seen through a looming buckminster-fuller style structure.

This exhibition closes on May 16th.

Thanks to all for coming down to Seventh for opening night and what a great one it was! Despite the chilly weather, the gallery was jam-packed, the crowd and art was all that was needed to generate some warmth. Come down for a closer look...

The intricate drawings of Alisdair McLuckie's 'The Highest Mountain Peaks, Right Before Dawn' surround the walls of Gallery One.

'The Body as Coloured Object' by Makiko Yamamoto in the Project Space. The crowd taking a closer look at the smaller pieces on the wall and in the intimate space.

A spectacular structure, the geodesic dome, fills Gallery Two by Kate Moss and John Burgess, 'Antipodal Sorcery' (Sorry about the blurry image, there are times when a tripod comes in handy).
'The invention of the geodesic dome was based on the geometry of nature and the principle's of nature's design so one does not feel closed in by the structure. It is reconstructed in skeletal form at Seventh Gallery and is a testament to the fluidity and mortality of social and theoretical constructs'.

Kirstyn Lyttle's 'The Body as a Coloured Object' projected on the Night Screen questioned the crowd by asking, 'What are you?'. This video attempts to visually explore some of the physical descriptors of the coloured body. It is screened after 6pm Tuesday to Saturday, come down and check it out!

Exhibition Opening April 7th

From the outside looking into Gallery One, the lights glared through the window of Seventh spilling out onto the street. The large crowd gathered inside and out to enjoy the exhibition opening night, mingling, drinking and craving the artwork.

It was a tight squeeze into Gallery One which is now showing the Safari Team's 'Safari Team Dig to China Part II', exploring the childhood myth of digging to China. The colourful, circular collages of work provide an insight into this wild adventure of danger and uncertainty.

The Project Space, containing the work of Amy-Jo Jory, drew inquisitive eyes sparked by static noise, making for a creepy, warm and mesmerising experience.

Gallery Two contains the work of Greg Penn, 'In Silent Mode'. This intriguing installation requires a closer look.
While Candice Cramner's 'Drill' played on the Night Screen, the crowd was also entertained by the tunes of Freddy Fudd Pucker, rounding up another great night at Seventh.

PROJECT SPACE - LOU HUBBARD

SINK is a team of soccer figurines drowning in time and circumstance. This work continues Lou's investigation into the nature of training, submission and subordination and the disciplinary spaces in which subjectivity and knowledge are formed.

It is Lou's practice to perform operations on everyday materials, manipulating them into new relationships according to set, formal rules that she invents. Her process is DIY, low-fi and positively domestic. Sometimes these strategies are witnessed and captured through a camera lens, resulting in videos that play on photography’s power to index untenable actions. Sometimes the actions become sculptural assemblages that are fitted and measured and precariously balanced.

GALLERY TWO - SOPHIE LAVENCE

Primarily working with video, and incorporating elements of photography, digital collage and installation within her practice, artist Sophie Lavence's work explores thresholds in perception, through cinematic space and visual symbolism. Her current exhibition at Seventh is paired with sounds by Grant Nimmo and Ryan Caesar of dynamic new collective Pilgrim Dance.

NIGHT SCREEN - KIERAN STEWART

SMALLER FORCES presents proxies for standard hand tools that are intrinsically brittle and fractured; imperfectly made and hardly a durable implement for labour. Like a badly made product produced en-masse, they also possess a limited usefulness and inbuilt expiry due to the medium of their construction. These flawed tools over emphasise the inherent fragility of the human body.

Gallery One, with Bianca Durrant's inquiry into natural history museums. These models are so lifelike they scared the bejezus out of the cat upstairs...

It's not the best shot, but it gives you an idea of the detail involved in this enormous drawing. Note the 70's pin & string folk-art technique around the edges...

The Project Space has been transformed into a broom-closet/art office, complete with rotting fruit in the fridge and a regular radio update on the horses - by Jess and Jordy from Hell Gallery. Take the time to peruse the scrawled notes on the notice board and savour the delicate aromas wafting from the open fridge.

In Gallery Two, Natasha Carrington's photographic works present the bleak and eerie world of institutional spaces: prisons, asylums etc.

These ones are of Pentridge prison.

Despite the sterile or authoritarian feel of the spaces presented here, there is certainly a sense of a very human history; the absence of people in the images incites the mind to create narratives of poor souls wandering the corridoors, scribbling confessions on the walls...

I am yet to get some shots of Andrew Liversidge's Counting the Waves which is currently on show in the Night Screen. Stay tuned...

Our first full gallery for the year; with great art work and a great turnout to the opening! The warm weather always helps to bring out the art-lover in everyone...

Stephanie Hick's combination of playful collages, wall drawing and sculpture, titled Caught between all that was and all that must be, comfortably fills Gallery One.

In the project space is Isaac Greener's intimate video installation, Jacob, in which two versions of the artist are interrogated by an unseen questioner about the purpose of his 'experiment'.

Ieuan Weinman's Diagrams of the Abhayagirya Stupa, in Gallery Two, takes the form of a makeshift bamboo and hemp scaffold; a shrine-like assemblage upon which a plethora of images of this monumental structure are presented, executed in various media.

Fiona Williams' Photograph Videos occupy the night screen. Watch these picturesque landscapes emerging from the milky surface of the polaroid, presumably positioned on the ground where they were taken. The background often appears slightly at odds with the image that emerges each time...

Our next opening is this Tuesday, the 3rd of February, from 6 - 9pm or so. [Apologies about the flyers, which incorrectly stated the opening was on the 2nd.] The next round of artists include: Mila Faranov, Vittoria Di Stefano, Christo Crocker & Andrew Phillips. See you there!

Happy New Year from SEVENTH!

As 2009 rolls in, things at seventh have already gotten underway. Our new calendar begins with the slightly macabre, yet ambiguously funny take on the new years eve countdown: 2056, a projected work by Sam Stewart, which is ocupying the night screen until the 10th of Jan. Sam's work presents the late night passer-by with an abrupt and potentially disconcerting clock of his - and therefore their - own mortality, whittled down to the exact second.

Thanks again to all those who participated in the $ell-Out Sale, it was a huge success thanks to all of our contributing artists and ticket buyers. Great vibes all round. Ahough I was stuck on the barbie and didn't get a chance to witness the mad rush at the start, from what I heard everyone exercised a great deal of restraint and cordiality to their fellow art-snatchers. Well done everyone!

Our next opening will be on Tuesday the 13th Jan, at which you will encounter the works of Stephanie Hicks, Ieuan Weinman, Isaac Greener and Fiona Williams. Stay tuned...

CALLING ALL ARTISTS: SEVENTH SUPER SELL-OUT SALE!!!!
Economic crisis! Help starving artists pay less rent! Save SEVENTH from destitution!

On Tuesday 16th of December, SEVENTH will be hosting an Every-Thing-Must-Go-Super-Sell-Out-Art-Sale and well, we need some art to “sell” and were wondering if you’d like to help us out....

We need 100 works on paper donated to gallery, which will be “sold” for $25 to 100 corresponding ticket holders. (See OVER for explanation of how the “sale” will work).

We would greatly appreciate a donation of a work on paper – a drawing, print or photograph, or any other wall-mountable object made from some sort of paper-like material.... If you donate 2 works, you get a ticket for free... Though this does sound like the beginnings of a pyramid scheme, let us assure you it is not. We are hoping to raise enough money to help subsidise the rent for 2009, when we will be extending the exhibition period from 2 to 3 weeks, and off-site projects we are hoping to develop in the New Year to generate opportunities for artists to show their work without paying rent.

Artworks will need to be delivered to the gallery between 9am and 1pm Sunday the 14th of December. If this is not possible you can contact Emma and we can arrange an alternative drop off prior to the 14th. We will then be hanging the show, salon-style and without names, that evening. The gallery will be open from the Monday for the “Preview” and the sell-out-sale will happen on Tuesday the 16th of December from 6-8pm.

On Tuesday 16th of December, SEVENTH will be hosting an Every-Thing-Must-Go-Super-Sell-Out-Art-Sale and YOU are invited! For the small price of $25 you get a free drink and an artwork (crazy!), not to mention the warm feeling inside that will come from the knowledge that you have saved one little Artist-Run-Space from the brink of collapse....

How does it work? SEVENTH has 100 tickets and 100 artworks on paper. For a mere $25 this ticket will entitle you, upon entrance, to 1 FREE DRINK and a SEVENTH sell-out-sticker, which you then attach to the artwork of your choice. It will be survival of the fittest as you scramble for the artwork you want!

From 12 pm Monday 15th of December to 6pm Tuesday 16th of December, SEVENTH will be open for “Preview” of the work on offer. At 6pm on Tuesday, the ticket exchange will open and sell-out-stickers will be issued to ticket holders who can then place their sticker on the unclaimed artwork of their choice, return to the counter to quote the artwork’s reference number and at 8pm, the sell-out-sale will end and the winners take home their newly acquired artwork!

You will get some art to put on your wall! SEVENTH will have made enough money to keep rent prices down in 2009! Everyone wins!!!!

How do I get a ticket? From Wednesday 19th of November tickets will be on sale from SEVENTH (Wednesday – Saturday, 12-6).
